Borne: The Borne Arctic Challenge April 2018

Oil NRG Supporting the Borne Arctic Challenge April 2018 – Trekking to the North Pole to raise funds for Borne’s vital research to prevent preterm birth.

Oil NRG, through our depots in Birtley, Hartlepool, Thetford and York, gave their fundraising support to ‘Borne’, a medical research charity whose aim is to identify the causes of premature birth to save lives, prevent disability and give millions of children the chance of a full life, free of disability. In April 2018, a team of 10, including Will Greenwood MBE, our friend, Sky commentator and Borne Patron, embarked on an expedition to cross the frozen ocean to the ends of the earth, traversing the last half degree to the North Pole.

The team walked for 8 hours daily across constantly moving sea ice pulling a sledge with everything that they need to survive, crossing pans of ice and navigating through open leads, rubble and ridges created by the moving ice floes. They made camp in temperatures between -25oC and -45o, facing white-outs, ferocious weather and occasionally drifting off course, all with the added risk of frost bite and polar bears.  Every day presented new challenges during what was one of the most extreme tests of physical and psychological endurance that they will ever face.

After four long days of trekking on the ice, it was Mission accomplished in record time, with Team Borne finally reaching the North Pole. They then spent two more nights on the ice before being airlifted back to Longyearbyen for a well-deserved rest. Everyone returned safe (and warm!) back home.

Oil NRG’s Sales Director Jeremy Royle, said that “Oil NRG chose to support ‘Borne’ because of their vital research into preventing preterm births, and their aim to create lifelong health for mothers and babies, some of whom are Oil NRG customers.”

The Facts;

  • Premature birth is the leading cause of childhood disability and death, more significant than infection, trauma or cancer
  • 15 million babies are born too soon each year. 1 million die.
  • In the UK, 1-in-12 babies are born preterm. That’s 60,000 children that would fill 285 primary schools.
  • 1-in-10 premature babies will develop a permanent disability, with 50% of premature babies born before the 26th week of gestation are disabled.
  • Babies born too soon face many challenges and it comes with a very high emotional and financial cost to our society.
  • 85% of women who present with threatened preterm labour, did not know they were at risk. For 45-50% or preterm births, the cause is unknown.
  • Borne know that if we can prolong all pregnancies destined to deliver preterm by a week, we can save the NHS £260,000,000 a year.
  • There have been no new treatments introduced to prolong pregnancy to term in over 50 years!

Only by investing in research will we understand what causes preterm labour, how to prevent early labour, and give future children a full and healthy life, unaffected by disability.
