Recent Developments in the Government's Energy and Green Policy: A Win for Off-Grid Homeowners

According to the BBC as of yesterday, 20th September 2023, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced delays to the government’s current key Net Zero plans, as part of a major policy shift. 

The recent announcement included positive news for UK off grid homeowners. The proposed policy shift includes a push back on the ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars and delaying the implementation of energy efficiency regulations on new homes, among others. However, one of the most eye-catching changes and likely the most promising change to off-grid home owners is the government's plans to delay the ban on oil boilers to 2035.

The Oil Boiler Ban Delay

Until yesterday the government had set out to ban oil boilers in 2026, which would mean that off-grid households would essentially have to upgrade their current heating systems and potentially switch to other heat sources e.g heating oil pumps.

However, according to the recent government announcement, a nine year extension on the original plans is set to be put in place, meaning the ban on off-grid boilers will be delayed until 2035, with a target of only 80% to be phased out by that year. 

How will the delay impact me as an off-grid homeowner?

Essentially, the delay to the ban on oil boilers, will ensure that off-grid homeowners have more time to explore more sustainable options, ensuring that homeowners don’t face substantial costs for upgrades in a short period of time.
